Tahajjud and Fajr prayers were held in a large hall in the hotel

where the Shaykh stayed as guest of Nahdlatul Ulama.

Surabaya - May 14th 2004

Scores of students from Jakarta accompanied the Shaykh to Surabaya, Indonesia's second largest city and home of the majority of the country's `ulama.

After Fajr, the Shaykh spoke on purification of the self.

Before leaving for Surabaya's Grand Assembly Mosque, Shaykh shares a relaxing moment with Dr. Muzadi.

Jami Masjid Akbar, or the Grand Assembly Mosque as it is known, is renowned for its exquisite ornamentation and lighting effects, highlighting the traditional engravings for which the Surabaya is known, all offset by the modernistic design of the mosque's structure.

Composite reveals the mosque's size, and the crowd: nearly 80,000 attend Jumu`ah.

Shaykh Hisham spoke on the importance of the focus on the Afterlife,

for the root of all wrongdoing,

as Sayyidina `Ali said, is the love of this worldly life.

Following the obligatory prayers, the Shaykh led the congregation in prayers for those who are absent who passed away in the last 24 hours (salaat al-janazah al-ghaib).

After the sunan prayers are completed, the Shaykh led the gathered assembly in a short session of Dhikr, followed by a long invocation for God's Mercy and Benevolence on the Nation of the Prophet (s) and on all humankind.

After prayers, Shaykh Kabbani entertains questions from the audience on the state of the Muslim Ummah and that sincerity is the remedy for current lack of global prosperity.

Thousands pushed forward to take initiation in the Naqshbandi-Haqqani Sufi Order.
