Visit to Table Mountain and Maitland Mosque

By the time the morning of November 6th had dawned we had already been awake two-and-a-half hours, praying the night vigil with our master, Shaykh Nazim. Shortly after breakfast, a number of South African mureeds joined Shaykh Nazim, Shaykh Hisham and the entire entourage from the US, Belgium, Holland, Pakistan, France, Sri Lanka on another South African adventure...

At the top, Mawlana Shaykh, Shaykh Hisham and the rest of the entourage, including a large number of Capetonians, disembarked from the cable car. Strolling along the top of Table Mountain, we were able to see far into the distance, our view obscured only near the horizon by a light haze.

From there the group boarded one of the modern, cylindrical cable cars, which took off and was soon traveling at about 50 mph at a vertical incline of over 50 degrees. The guide told everyone to stay away from the edges of the car, as the floor began rotating slowly, allowing everyone a full 360 degree view of the Cape Town vista over the course of the ascent.

Shaykh Nazim proceeded along the walkways, built by the South African parks service, which line the precipitous vertical cliffs of the mountain. The mountaintop itself is flat, and fairly narrow.

Shaykh Nazim enjoyed the antics of a rock rabbit”, an indigenous rodent which appeared to appreciate the attention and bits of food thrown to it by the tourists.

The group accompanied the Shaykh to many of the over look points along the many trails, at one point looking out towards Cape Point, where the two oceans, the Atlantic and the Indian meet.

Everyone partook of delicious snacks brought up by the event organizers, Professor Da Costa and Imam Walele.

Following an interesting meeting between a German tourist and Shaykh Nazim, adhan was called by Bahauddin Adil and Mawlana led Salat al-Dhuhr from an overlook, hanging in space directly over the city.

Shafiq, photographer and Voice of the Cape radio show host, later remarked on a photo of the Shaykh praying on the platform, “the platform points directly Northeast. That photo appeared to manifest as the Shaykh’s intention, as he stated in his talks, of spreading Islam from Cape Town north, throughout the entire continent of Africa.”

Following the Salat, Shaykh Nazim led a group dhikr from heights, 1,000 meters above Cape Town. He remarked later that this mountain had a very special spiritual significance, and he prayed that anyone visiting it would be blessed with finding the way to the paths of Truth, al-Haqq, through the course of his or her life.

After Salat, the group returned to the cable car station for the trip back to the bottom of the mountain. From there they proceeded back to Dr. Da Costa’s home for a brief rest. The next stop – dinner for the entourage at the home of one of Cape Town's senior mureeds.

There, as had become standard, the fare was exceptional, and food was served to over 300 people, many of whom had never met the Shaykh. There they were afforded the opportunity to greet him and even have a brief personal chat.

Following dinner Salat al-Maghrib was held and then the entire group moved to the Maitland Mosque for Salat al-Isha.

After the salat, in the packed mosque, Shaykh Nazim gave a moving sohbat and then led Dhikr.

After Dhikr, men rushed the Shaykh eager to take initiation into the Naqshbandi Order, and literally had to be pushed back in order to give the Shaykh room.

Following initiation of the men, a large number of ladies took initiation, followed by greeting of the Shaykh.
