On Sunday, August 27th, 2000, a large gathering was held at Masjid al-Aqsa, 2136 8th Ave. in Harlem, New York. There Shaykh Nazim Adil Al-Haqqani al-Muhammadi al-Naqshbandi was invited by the combined jama`ats of three Harlem mosques. There an audience sat enraptured as Shaykh Nazim addressed them on the need to increase their Divine Service and leave love of dunya
Informing the mainly African members of the congregation of 2500 attendees, the shaykh told them that they are the flag-carriers of Islam to this nation, particularly to the African-Americans, and that the zakat for their money is 2.5% of their wealth, but the zakat on their faith is to bring one person to Islam.

After the 'Isha salaat, Suleiman Diomande, the Naqshbandi representative for the Harlem area, brought a group of non-Muslims, who had been attending Dhikr sessions and Islamic teaching circles with him for the past eight months in preparation for this tremendous event of the evening: taking shahada. Witnessed by 2500 participants, the 250 young men and women recited the shahada together, entering Islam in one moment.

Following the mass shahada ceremony, the entire congregation of the mosque joined their hands in taking initiation into the Naqshbandi Sufi Order. With this, Shaykh Nazim gave them the good tidings that in the future, more than 70 mosques would be built by them and their spiritual "descendants" in the local area, all for new Muslims and 'revived' Muslims, insha-Allah.
