--------------------------------------------

Sultan Ibrahim was tall, strong and well educated. He was by no means out of his mind, as some writers of his time stated. When his brother Amurath the Fourth died, Ibrahim took power, giving thanks to Allah for the honour.

When he became Sultan, Ibrahim was the only man in the Ottoman dynasty, although Mahomed the Fourth and others were born a year after he was crowned, thus saving the line of succession.

At the start of his reign Ibrahim struggled with the Janissary troops but, throughout his time in power, he continued to be unduly influenced by sycophants. The ugly rumours about his sanity were started by his assassins in an attempt to prove that they had been right to kill him.

Ibrahim, all his life, suffered from chronic headaches. In 1645 the Cretan War broke out with the Venetians. Hania and Resmo were captured and Candie Citadel was besieged in 1646 and seized two years later. In the same year Sultan Ibrahim was dethroned and murdered.

The famous poet Rouhi-ee Baghdadee and Abdoullah Sinobee, the annotator of Phousous, died during Ibrahim's reign.

Ibrahim had eight sons, Mehmed (or Mahomed) being the most important. He also had five daughters.
