Sultan Ahmed the Second was an active man who was fond of
culture and learning. He was a superb penman and copied out
several issues of the Qur'an himself. He understood both Arabicand
Persian and always took a full part in therunning of the Empire.
Indeed, even when he wasill, he wanted to be totally in charge
of everything.
Ahmed wrote poetry and often spoke with
the leading writers of his time. He allowed Fazyl Moustapha
Pasha to continue with his viziership and, in fact, the Grand
Vizier died at the battle of Salankamen in 1691. A fierce
war with Venice took place, Turkey gaining the victory of
Hania in August 1692.
In 1693 two large fires broke out in Istanbul
and 5,000 homes were destroyed. In the same year Belgrade
was besieged by the Germans but they were repelled with the
loss of 10,000 men. The island of Sakiz was occupied on September
21st, 1693.
Sultan Ahmed died at Edirne on February
6th, 1695. His body was brought to Istanbul and buried in
the mausoleum of Suleyman the Great.
He had two sons, Ibrahim and Selim and three
daughters called Atike Sultana, Hatidje Sultana and Asiye
Sultana.
