Sultan Osman Khan was born in Istanbul,
and his mother raising him up religiously. He was very honest
and compassionate to the poor. He was a calligrapher and produced
excellent manuscripts. He sketched the holy footprint of Mohammed
(s) and drew a Taughra (an ornamental monogram) near it, then
gave the finished product to the Mausoleum of Eyub Sultan
as a gift.
Osman was nervous and quick to judge. He
wore shoes with nails in the heels so as women could scuttle
away to their private quarters whenever they heard him coming.
He was already well over 50 when he became Sultan.
In 1755, the Golden Horn froze, and in the
same year, a great fire broke out causing over half the city
of Istanbul to suffer great damages. A year later, there was
a second fire and 4,000 buildings were totally destroyed.
Sultan Osman Khan was 58 when he died, his
body being buried next to Sultan Mahmud in the yard of the
New Mosque.
He had no children.
