--------------------------------------------
(b. Sept. 8, 1779, Constantinople--d. Nov.
17, 1808, Constantinople), Ottoman sultan from 1807 to 1808
who participated in the reactionary conservative coalition
that overthrew his reforming cousin, the sultan Selim III.
Sultan Mustafa the Fourth was like many
other sultans, a good calligrapher.
A fanatical and ambitious man, Mustafa,
under the influence of the shaykh al-islam (head of the Muslim
religious hierarchy) and the Janissaries, ended Selim's reforms
and killed most of the reformers.
Kabakchi Mustafa, leader of the rebel, had
deposed Selim the Third in an attempt to prevent his reforms,
and thus, Mustafa the Fourth was made Sultan by the rebels.
The rebels thereby gained many important positions in the
government.
The leaders of the Nizam-i Djidid which
had been founded by Selim, gathered around Bayrakdar Mustafa
Pasa of Rusçuk (modern Ruse, Bulg.). They marched to
Istanbul to restore Selim III. Mustafa, informed of Bayrakdar's
intentions, killed Selim. He himself was immediately deposed
(July 28, 1808) and lived in confinement in a part of the
Topkapi Palace.
The Islamic scholars decided that the dynasty
would be better with Mustafa dead and thus, issued a fatwa
(legal ruling) to execute him and orders came from his brother,
who succeeded him as Mahmud II.
The war with Russia continued during the
riegn of Sultan Mustafa.
During Mustafa's reign the first steam ship
was built in Turkey. Mustafa had one daughter called Emina
Sultana.
